Thursday 27 January 2011

On Thursday 27th January, my group and I went to Riverside (our chosen location) to take still image shots of our location and to also do a short clip of recording just to get the idea of where we would be filming and how it would look. As you can see by the video the video quality isn't good as we did do these on a digital camera and it was done pretty quickly. We learnt from this that we may need to do the journey in another direction and we picked up some skills to use in and improve our filming. Something we do need to consider is that when we film it will be darker, so we need to look into lighting too.

Self Assessment

Assessment Criteria:
So far we have succeeded in:
  • Our continuity task (yet to upload)
  • Our planning and organisation is up to date
  • We have created our animatic movie with post it notes and voice over on iMovie
  • We have individually researched certain areas (Me - mise en scence, Chris - Sound and Anastasiya - Editing)
  • We have taken location shots
  • used different types of technology, e.g prezi to make a concept board
We have yet the following goals to achieve:
  •  to start filming - this will be completed in two different parts: the first part (in the basement) we will film on Thursday 3rd February and we will be doing this after schol and will take place in the drama classroom. The second part we will film in riverside a week later the 10th of February and this will be at around 6pm (as it is dark)
  • Also we need to collect appropriate props, eg for the first scene we will need a poker table, cards, alcohol and fake cigerettes etc. And also a gun for the second half.
  • when the filming is complete (hopefully achieved by the 11h feb) we will need to upload and edit it eventually.

Mise en scene.

My role within our group is to focus on the mise-en-scene in our opening title sequence. I did some research on the typical mise on scene you may see in a film noir, and constrasted it with how we will have ours.

LOW-KEY LIGHTING
A lighting scheme that employs very little fill light, creating strong contrasts between the brightest and darkest parts of an image and often creating strong shadows that obscure parts of the principal subjects. This lighting scheme is often associated with "hard-boiled" or suspense genres such as film noir. We will stick to the main idea of light focusing on the characters and creating a dark atmosphere around them. We will create contrast, and use bright lights.

LOCATION
Usually film noir scenes are filmed at a location which is old fashioned looking and where shadows and lighting variations usually exist, like a long street with street lights. Elements like these will help make our film noir compelling. Cigarette smoke can be used to to add good effect, to add white to an otherwise dark scene. We have selected our chosen destination as a bridge over a river in a place called Riverside, which is local to us. It is mysterious yet conventional to fit where we need to film it.

COSTUMES
After doing some research, I noticed that the femme fatal character in a film noir movie usually wears a somewhat revealing, sensual yet elegant dress, which is also vintagey looking. The men are often seen in a suit and a hat. Our femme fatal will be wearing a velvet dress, have curly hair and a bright red lipstick, and have a glamorous edge to her

PROPS
We will be using cigarettes, poker cards, alcoholic beverages, etc.

Our individual roles within the group,

My role is to be focusing on mise-en-scene, I shall be looking closely into costumes and props for our characters as well choosing an appropriate location and also be making decisions on the lighting. I shall be investigating how our characters will present themselves and how it is best for us to put our representations across.

Chris is going to look closely into sound and is going to experiment into how we could use different things to create sound effects, for example stabbing a cabbage to create the sound of stabbing somebody. He is also going to think about any non-diegetic sounds such as music and ways that we could use it without breaking the terms of copyright.

Anastasiya is going to be in charge of editing She will be looking in detail at the camera effects and how to do them and which ones will be best for our project. She will be experimenting with different editing programs to see what ones are best to edit our final OTS on.

We all have individual roles, and are responsible for separate things to research and work on, however we will be filming and editing it together, so we can all share our thoughts and produce the best work possible.

Researching Audience, Task one.
